In February, Principal Recruitment Consultant and Armed Forces Covenant Champion, Peter Heap, set a formidable challenge for himself: to climb the 1,334ft Wrekin Hill in Shropshire 100 times in 2024 to raise funds for Telford Mind’s Veterans Café – He named it The Wrekin 100 Challenge.
When Pete reached his 25th ascent, some of his colleagues at Jonathan Lee Recruitment decided to support him by pledging to join him for his 40th climb.
Pete’s Pals (LtR) – Steven Franklin, Matthew Heath, Gareth Simpson, Peter Heap, Hannah Price, Sarah Bridges, Joanne Smithson, Maureen Cole, Jason Cole along with morale boosters Murphy and Billy. Thanks to our fantastic photographer Adelle Heath!
As promised, one month on, on a beautiful, sunny evening, the team dubbed ‘Pete’s Pals’ departed the Jonathan Lee office in Stourbridge for the Wrekin with some of their partners and the real show-stoppers, their four-legged friends Murphy and Billy.
After a quick stop at Pete’s house for some pre-walk snacks, which were a particular hit with Murphy the dog, the ascent began!
The climb started with some steep inclines that took many by surprise, but the team quickly found their stride, buoyed by Pete’s enthusiasm as he shared his favourite spots along the trail, including Pete’s Puddle, Pete’s Pitstop 1, Pete’s Plateau, Pete’s Plinth and Pete’s Pitstop 2. The perfect weather provided stunning views from the top (Pete’s Pinnacle!), making the effort extra special.
During the climb, Pete reminded the team of his motivation for the Wrekin 100 challenge: as a veteran himself, he understands the importance of having a place to go and people to talk to. The Veterans Café and Wellbeing Hub offers such a space, providing support, advice, and companionship for veterans. Pete expressed his gratitude for the support so far, with donations already surpassing £700, and has now set his sights on breaking the £1,000 mark. To donate to Pete’s fundraiser, click here.
“As a Veteran I know the importance of having a place to go to and people to talk to to raise money for The Veterans Wellbeing Hub, it is such a fantastic service offered by Telford Mind and as a Veteran myself with 20 years of service, I really do appreciate and see the benefit of a place you can go to and talk to someone that just knows and understands, It’s a great place to get support, advice or to find someone to listen.”
He also thanked the team for joining him on his 40th walk and looked forward to his 50th, where he will be accompanied a group of fellow veterans he served with, marking another significant milestone in his journey.
