Step into a hands-on Electrical Improver role where everyday work makes a real difference to safety, reliability, and performance across commercial and industrial sites. This Electrical Improver position offers a clear 12+week assignment on a short, structured programme, helping you build momentum, showcase proven site skills, and keep your career progressing in the fire and security and electrical installation industry.

 

What You Will Do:

 

• Assist with installing containment such as conduit, tray, basket, trunking across the Derby site and keep work areas organised.
• Support the installation and dressing of electrical/fire alarm cabling under supervision, ensuring neat, safe, and compliant routing.
• Help with fitting and mounting alarm equipment and devices including detectors, sounders, call points, interfaces and associated field components (with final connections, testing and commissioning handled by qualified electricians or fire and security engineers).
• Work confidently at height from MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms) as part of the site installation plan.
• Operate as an effective team member, working alongside qualified electricians or fire and security engineers and following site processes.
• Carry out the “improver” elements of the role to a high standard, contributing to smooth delivery throughout the 12-week period.

 

What You Will Bring:

 

• Experience installing containment and electrical/fire alarm cabling in commercial or industrial environments.
• Familiarity with working on electrical installation projects, including assisting with the installation of alarm equipment and cabling under supervision.
• Confidence working at height from MEWPs, with a valid IPAF licence preferred (or willingness to obtain).
• An ECS card (or equivalent) suitable for site access, ideally aligned to Electrical Labourer/Improver routes.
• A safety-first mindset and a reliable, professional approach to working under supervision on live project sites.

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical biased Test Engineer to join our engineering team, responsible for the inspection, testing and verification of bespoke electrical systems and equipment throughout the manufacturing process.

This role operates within highly regulated industries, including the nuclear sector, where strict adherence to quality, safety and compliance standards is essential. You will be responsible for ensuring electrical systems, control panels and associated equipment are fully tested, verified and documented prior to delivery.

This position will require eligibility for Security Clearance (SC) due to the nature of the projects and customer sites involved.

Working closely with Design, Manufacturing and Quality teams, you will help ensure all products meet customer specifications, relevant legislation and industry standards.

The Role

As an Electrical Test Engineer, you will:

  • Carry out electrical inspection, testing and fault finding on low-voltage electrical systems, control panels and associated equipment.
  • Perform electrical verification, including continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, and functional testing using calibrated test equipment.
  • Carry out and support hydraulic testing activities, including pressure testing of associated systems where required (following appropriate procedures and safety controls).
  • Produce and maintain electrical and test documentation, including:
  • Electrical inspection and test records
  • Functional test procedures
  • Hydraulic and pressure test records
  • Test reports and certification
  • Safe Systems of Work (SSOW)
  • Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
  • Verify electrical and mechanical assemblies against engineering drawings, schematics and specifications.
  • Identify electrical and hydraulic faults, defects and non-conformities, supporting root cause investigations and corrective actions.
  • Ensure all testing activities comply with BS7671, relevant nuclear sector quality standards, and company procedures.
  • Work closely with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to resolve technical issues and improve product quality.
  • Support final product verification prior to customer inspection and release.
  • Maintain calibration records and ensure all test equipment is fit for purpose.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely under controlled procedures suitable for regulated and nuclear environments.

What We're Looking For:

Essential

  • HNC/HND or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or Maintenance (or equivalent).
  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS7671).
  • City & Guilds 2391 Inspection & Testing (or equivalent) desirable.
  • Experience testing industrial electrical systems, control panels or bespoke engineered equipment.
  • Experience working within highly regulated environments (nuclear sector experience preferred).
  • Eligibility for Security Clearance (SC) is essential.
  • Understanding of electrical and hydraulic systems used in industrial equipment.
  • Experience supporting or conducting hydraulic pressure testing or similar mechanical integrity testing.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across electrical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and engineering drawings.

  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 / nuclear quality assurance standards.
  • Understanding of control systems and PLC-based equipment.
  • Experience with structured test documentation in regulated environments.

We're currently recruiting for an experienced Approved Electrician to support a range of industrial electrical installation projects at a major manufacturing facility in Telford.

This is an excellent opportunity to join an established engineering team working on a variety of electrical installation, upgrade and maintenance projects within a busy industrial environment.

The Role

Working as part of a skilled site team, you'll be responsible for carrying out high-quality electrical installation work while ensuring all activities are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with current regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Industrial electrical installation work.
  • Installation of containment including tray, basket, trunking and conduit.
  • Cable pulling, terminating and glanding.
  • Installation and connection of motors, control panels and industrial equipment.
  • Electrical modifications and project installation work.
  • Reading and interpreting electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Testing and inspecting completed installations where required.
  • Ensuring all work complies with BS7671 and site health and safety procedures.
  • Working collaboratively with supervisors, engineers and other trades to deliver projects on schedule.

About You

To be considered, you'll ideally have:

  • Approved Electrician status.
