Title: Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Bolton

Salary: Negotiable Depending on Experience

Overview:

We are currently supporting our client with a Mechanical Design Engineer role, this is an exciting role to carry out all aspects of mechanical design via production of 3D Models, General Arrangement drawings, and Design for Manufacture output (including Assembly drawings, Fabrication drawings, Bill of Materials’, and As-built drawings) in accordance with company procedure and/ or customer specification.

The role is responsible for generating compliant and accurate design output into purchasing, production, and operations.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Produce designs that comply with product assurance limitations, and that fully consider all stages of the product lifecycle (including material limitations, manufacturability, installability, operability etc).
  • Elimination of H&S risks from designs in accordance with CDM regulations.
  • Produce Designer’s Risk Assessment’s for designs as required by project or product, clearly identifying mitigation measures incorporated.
  • Prepare 3D models in Autodesk Inventor to meet project demand, as necessary.
  • Produce 2D drawings from 3D models for customer review/ approval, and internal/ external 
    manufacturing process, in accordance with the Engineering Handbook, and BS 8888.
  • Responsible for ensuring self-prepared drawings/ models/ documents are correct and concise prior to release into SQEP Design checker(s).
  • Work closely with analysis engineers to ensure designs/ models/ drawings developed accurately reflect the theoretical analysis, advising on design issues, and logging changes in accordance with company procedure.
  • Understand the build sequence in design of all output, prior to release into production engineering.
  • Attend Design and/ or Manufacturability reviews, driving the 3D model where appropriate, and communicating design intent to the wider project team.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to increase departmental design capabilities and improve efficiency. 
  • Contribute to R&D activities as required. Discuss innovative design solutions for bespoke works with peers and superiors.
  • Confirm appropriate door template with Engineering Supervisor or Senior Engineer(s) prior to commencing work, where appropriate.
  • Maximise change capture within the department, ensuring all change is captured on projects.
  • Provide support to the wider project team, liaising with customers as required.
  • Complete adherence to companies ISO 9001 procedures for engineering department.
  • Responsible for achieving schedule adherence for all actions assigned to individual/ role. 
  • Ensure personal objectives are completed in a timely manner, and contribute to overall departmental/ business objectives year-on-year.
  • Submission of timesheets, sickness/ absence/ holiday requests, and 1-2-1 preparation, in accordance with company procedure.
  • Maintain alignment with company values and vision.
  • Any other ad hoc duties as may be required, and as commensurate with the grade of post.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

Essential:

  • Either a Minimum HND in Engineering, plus 5 years’ experience of industrial sheet/ steel fabrications Or a Minimum Bachelor’s degree (BEng Hons) in Engineering (preferably Mechanical Engineering) plus 3 years’ experience of industrial sheet/ steel fabrications.
  • Ability to use Autodesk 3D Inventor, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Vault unaided
  • Understanding of steel manufacturing techniques and limitations (incl. press brake).
  • Understanding of load paths, failure modes, and operating limits of steel structures/ components.
  • A focus on quality adherence and timely output.
  • Evidence a working knowledge of BS 8888 for engineering drawings.
  • Ability to compile coherent Designer’s Risk Assessments.
  • Flexibility to work overtime to achieve project plan as required.
  • Strong communicator with internal and external customers alike.

Desirable:

  • Awareness of door performance testing standards and guides.
  • Understanding of drive and control systems operating principals.
  • Knowledge of welding types, strengths, and limitations.
  • Understanding of tolerance stacking, and the practical application of tolerances.
  • Ability to programme templates using iLogic/ VB.
  • Hold valid SC clearance, or hold the ability to obtain it.

We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to take ownership of commissioning activities across the full lifecycle of complex with bespoke engineering projects.

This is a key role responsible for developing and delivering commissioning strategies, leading testing activities, and acting as the commissioning authority across multidisciplinary teams. You will play a critical part in ensuring engineered solutions are tested, verified, and delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with project and regulatory requirements.

The Role

As Commissioning Engineer, you will:

  • Develop and implement commissioning strategies for bespoke engineering projects.
  • Produce comprehensive test and commissioning documentation, including:
  • Pressure and proof load testing
  • Control panel inspections
  • Setting-to-work documentation
  • Safe systems of work
  • Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT)
  • Site Acceptance Tests (SAT)
  • Manage handovers between Manufacturing and Commissioning functions.
  • Lead and execute FAT and SAT activities, ensuring risk assessments, test equipment, and temporary commissioning aids are in place.
  • Identify and report non-conformities, supporting structured resolution processes.
  • Ensure commissioning activities are delivered safely, on time, and in line with project scope.
  • Support tendering activities by estimating commissioning scope, hours, and deliverables.
  • Coordinate and motivate commissioning and test engineers to achieve project objectives.

What We’re Looking For:

You will bring strong technical credibility combined with practical commissioning leadership experience.

Essential:

  • HNC (or equivalent) in an Engineering discipline or higher qualification.
  • Extensive hands-on engineering experience.
  • Experience leading or managing commissioning teams.
  • Broad knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical systems.
  • Understanding of relevant British and European Standards (e.g. BS7671).
  • Strong problem-solving ability and adaptability in dynamic project environments.
