High Voltage Engineer / HV Authorised Person (AP) – Power Systems

Location: Ellesmere Port, Cheshire
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Working Hours: Days, with on-call support
Contract: Permanent, full-time

The Opportunity

Are you an experienced High Voltage (HV) Engineer, Electrical Engineer or HV Authorised Person looking for an opportunity to take ownership of critical electrical infrastructure within a growing industrial manufacturing business?

We are recruiting on behalf of our client, a specialist manufacturing business, for an HV/Power Engineer to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of its electrical power infrastructure at its Ellesmere Port facility.

This is an important technical position, responsible for the site's high-voltage and low-voltage electrical distribution systems, including HV switching, transformers, switchgear and the high-current power supplies supporting its electrolysis processes.

With significant investment in new process capacity and the development of a 24/7 manufacturing operation, this is an opportunity to play a key role in maintaining and developing the site's electrical infrastructure as the business grows.

The Role

Reporting to the Engineering Leader, you will take responsibility for maintaining and improving the site's HV and LV electrical power systems, ensuring safe operation, regulatory compliance and sufficient power capacity to support ongoing expansion.

You will act as the site's HV Authorised Person (AP) or Senior Authorised Person (SAP), depending on your level of authorisation and experience, overseeing HV switching, electrical isolation and safe systems of work.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the site's HV Authorised Person (AP) or Senior Authorised Person (SAP), taking responsibility for HV switching, isolation procedures and electrical safety permits.
  • Operating, inspecting and maintaining HV and LV electrical distribution systems, including switchgear, transformers and rectifiers.
  • Supporting the reliability and availability of critical industrial electrical infrastructure.
  • Planning and managing electrical power upgrades, infrastructure improvements and new electrical connections as the site expands.
  • Liaising with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), external contractors and specialist electrical engineering providers.
  • Monitoring electrical power quality, load requirements and energy consumption, identifying opportunities for improved efficiency and performance.
  • Maintaining electrical safety procedures, HV records, single-line diagrams and associated technical documentation.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations and relevant electrical engineering standards.
  • Managing specialist HV contractors and overseeing electrical works to ensure safe and effective delivery.

About You

You will be an experienced electrical or power engineering professional with a background in industrial HV electrical systems, ideally within a manufacturing, process engineering or other heavy industrial environment.

You will have a strong understanding of high-voltage electrical distribution, safe switching and isolation procedures, and the maintenance of critical electrical infrastructure.

Essential experience and qualifications:

  • HNC, HND or degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Current HV Authorised Person (AP) or Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status, or the demonstrable experience and competence to be appointed quickly.
  • Experience working with and maintaining industrial HV and LV electrical distribution systems, at 11kV or above.
  • Good knowledge of HV switchgear, transformers and electrical distribution infrastructure.
  • Thorough understanding of the Electricity at Work Regulations and BS 7671.
  • Experience working within electrical safety procedures, including switching, isolation and permit systems.

Desirable experience:

  • Experience with rectifiers and high-current DC electrical supplies.
  • Exposure to electrolysis, metal processing, smelting, plating or other energy-intensive industrial processes.
  • Experience with electrical power quality, load management and energy efficiency improvements.
  • Experience managing electrical infrastructure upgrades and new power connections.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status through the IET.

The Opportunity

  • Join an established specialist manufacturing business operating in the strategically important rare earth metals sector.
  • Play a key role in maintaining and developing critical site-wide electrical infrastructure.
  • Be involved in significant investment, new process capacity and the development of a 24/7 manufacturing operation.
  • Take ownership of an important technical engineering function within the business.
  • Work on specialist HV and high-current electrical systems within an industrial manufacturing environment.

If you are an experienced HV Engineer, Electrical Power Engineer or HV Authorised Person looking for your next opportunity in industrial engineering, we would welcome your application.
