Applications Engineer

You will join an innovative engineering environment where learning is built into the role, and where the chance to develop expertise within a specialist field that supply product to industries including F1, space, medical and automotive. The Applications Engineer is a non-stop mix of mechanical know-how, design, prototyping, machining, machine build whilst also being customer facing to understand & provide a design solution to their requirements
What You Will Do as Applications Engineer:
- Designing tooling/work holding for coil winding bobbins utilising CAD design, layout of engineering drawings
- Making prototype tooling/work holding using workshop machinery; manual lathe, milling machine, grinding, workshop hand tools & equipment
- Using CAD data for 3D printing to manufacture temporary tooling and prototyping (in-house 3D printing facilities)
- Run trials on different materials and sample components, evaluating results and adapting tooling and machine configuration accordingly
- Basic electrical work (e.g. swapping out controllers and motors) as part of machine modifications
- Evaluating sample components and identifying the right machine/tooling approach
- Running trials and testing different materials / customer samples
- Support customers with technical assistance, plus occasional site visits when required.
What You Will Bring as Applications Engineer:
- Strong fundamental mechanical engineering understanding, with proven practical capability using toolroom equipment such as manual lathe and milling machine
- Confidence to read technical drawings and take ideas from 2D/3D design through to manufacture, producing practical outcomes rather than purely visual CAD.
- Ability to understand basic electrical systems, such as reading simple wiring or circuit diagrams and completing straightforward component swaps safely.
- A willingness to take machines apart and reassemble without needing step-by-step guidance, with a proactive “have a go” attitude.
- Ability to work independently to solve design problems through both engineering design and the practical manufacture of components from aluminium and mild steel
