Senior Project Manager

Overview:
- As a Senior Project Manager, you will lead the successful delivery of complex, high-value projects and programmes, ensuring they align with strategic business objectives while maximising commercial performance.
- You’ll operate at both a strategic and operational level, owning project performance end-to-end, from financial accountability and risk management to stakeholder engagement and delivery excellence. Acting as the critical link between clients, senior leadership, and delivery teams, you will drive results in demanding, fast-paced environments.
- Beyond delivery, you will play a key role in business growth, supporting bids and tenders, championing continuous improvement, and mentoring the next generation of project professionals.
Key Responsibilities:
Project & Programme Leadership
- Lead complex, high-risk or multi-million-pound projects from award through to completion and installation
- Provide strategic direction to cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives
- Manage multiple projects or programmes, ensuring alignment with business priorities
- Act as the escalation point for critical risks and issues
Commercial & Financial Management
- Own full P&L accountability across projects or programme portfolios
- Drive profitability through cost control, margin improvement, and accurate forecasting
- Lead commercial negotiations with clients and subcontractors
- Identify and manage risks and opportunities to optimise outcomes
Stakeholder & Client Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with senior client stakeholders
- Act as a trusted advisor, ensuring client expectations are understood and exceeded
- Deliver executive-level reporting internally and externally
- Manage conflicts and stakeholder expectations effectively
Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Establish robust governance frameworks across projects
- Ensure compliance with NEC contracts, internal procedures, and regulatory standards
- Proactively manage commercial, technical, and delivery risks
- Lead change management processes
Planning & Delivery
- Drive effective planning using tools such as MS Project or Primavera P6
- Oversee Work Breakdown Structures, resource planning, and delivery execution
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams (engineering, procurement, SHEQ, commercial)
- Ensure delivery against cost, quality, safety, and schedule targets
- Leadership & People Development
- Lead, coach, and develop Project Managers and delivery teams
- Build high-performing, collaborative environments
- Provide clear direction, performance management, and mentoring
- Foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
Business Improvement & Strategy
- Contribute to wider organisational strategy
- Lead or support initiatives to enhance project delivery performance
- Identify and implement process, tool, and methodology improvements
- Support bid and tender activities, including commercial and risk input
- Operational Excellence
- Ensure accurate, timely project reporting
- Maintain robust, auditable project documentation
- Support audits and governance reviews
- Uphold Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) standards
- Additional Responsibilities
- Support wider business objectives and departmental targets
- Adapt to client environments and processes
- Travel nationally and internationally as required
- Undertake additional duties aligned with the seniority of the role
Essential Experience & Qualifications:
- Formal Project Management qualification (APM, PMI or equivalent)
- Degree or HND in Engineering, Construction, or related discipline
- Proven track record delivering complex, high-value or multiple concurrent projects/programmes
- Strong experience working with NEC contracts (NEC3/NEC4)
- Demonstrated P&L ownership and strong commercial acumen
- Experience leading teams and managing performance
- Ability to influence senior stakeholders and deliver executive-level reporting
- Strong knowledge of project management methodologies, tools, and best practice
- Expertise in risk, change, and stakeholder management
Desirable:
- Chartered status (APM, PMI or equivalent)
- Experience managing programmes or portfolios
- Background in regulated sectors (e.g. MOD, Nuclear, Rail)
- Experience in business development, bids, or tenders
- Proficiency with MS Project, Primavera P6, and project platforms
- Experience with document control systems
