Wolverhampton is a city located in the West Midlands, which lies northwest of its larger neighbour Birmingham.
Originally part of Staffordshire, Wolverhampton is named after Wulfrun, who founded the town in 985, from the Anglo-Saxon Wulfrūnehēantūn meaning "Wulfrūn's high or principal enclosure or farm
Initially the city grew as a market town, specialising in the woollen trade. Then, during the Industrial Revolution, it became a major centre for coal mining, as well as steel production, lock making and the manufacture of cars and motorcycles. Engineering dominates today’s economy, including a large aerospace industry, as well as the service sector.
