Lying roughly 16 miles north of Birmingham, the beautiful city of Lichfield is a civil parish in Staffordshire. First mentioned in literature around 669 AD, the settlement was established with the arrival of Chad of Mercia and the settlement grew as the ecclesiastical centre of Mercia.
Today, the city retains its position as a centre of faith and under agreement with planners and the parish council, there has been limited industrial and commercial development. The city centre is home to over 230 listed buildings and notably for its three-spired medieval cathedral. With its streets laid out in a ladder pattern, the city developed first as a centre for woollen cloth and leather working, and then in the 18th century became a busy coaching centre with a vibrant hostelry industry but when the railways overtook coaching, brewing and food production became the major drivers in the local economy.
The city has spawned many famous people including David Garrick, Erasmus Darwin, Anna Seward and Samuel Johnson who declared that Lichfield was "a city of philosophers". In 2009, the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork ever to be found, now known as the Staffordshire Hoard, was found just outside with city.
