Role- Technical Author

Duration- 12 month contract

Location- Bedford

Rate- Equivalent to £34k-£38k for 12 month contract

We are currently recruiting a Technical Author to work for a  unique SME with a passionate workforce of engineering and aerodynamic professionals. Our client are a leading specialist in aerodynamic research providing complementary services and solutions to international aerospace and defence clients. Our clients include Saab, Bombardier, Boeing, Turkish Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, Airbus, Comac and BAE Systems.

Your main responsibility as a Technical Author / Document Controller will be to create, deliver, edit and review internal and customer facing technical documentation. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development of all aspects of document control across the organisation, reviewing current processes, and developing and implementing improvement.

Candidates with experience within Aerospace and Defence industry will be very well received.

Main duties and responsibilities as a Technical Author:

  • increase documentation output and clarity and improve project performance
  • Bring some order to the documents that the company produces and retains
  • Develop processes for document control
  • Assist with compiling subcontractor documentation
  • Working with subject matter experts to understand systems, and to produce easy to understand, professional standard, user and/or operation and maintenance manuals for safety critical systems, including high pressure air compressors and distribution systems, wind tunnel test facilities, and their auxiliary systems
  • Working with key subcontractors to support compilation, handover, and cataloguing of document packs for a range of systems recently installed on site 3.
  • Reviewing documents against installed equipment to ensure accuracy, and ensuring any required amendments to documents are made
  • Liaising with project team members, project managers, team leads, and heads of departments to ensure documents meet requirements, and appropriate approvals are obtained, including supporting the roll-out of Engineering Change Request procedures across company operations
  • Through consultation and collaboration with relevant teams, gaining an understanding of the current document control processes, approvals procedures, registers, and archives on site
  • Drawing on experience of good engineering documentation management practises, and relevant quality processes, making initial recommendations to team leads and department heads for improvement of processes, procedures registers and archives, supporting implementation of these, and conducting regular (minimum quarterly) reviews of their continuing use.
  • Developing professional document templates for internal and externally disseminated documents to ensure consistency with company branding, and improve efficiency of documentation production, using the Microsoft suite of programmes.
  • In collaboration with team leads and heads of department, delivering training to staff in document management best practice, and document management systems
  • Preparation of monthly progress reports to their line manager detailing actions underway and plans for the coming month, for inclusion in monthly report to the management team.

The successful candidate for our Technical Author role will have the following skills & experience:

  • University degree or equivalent skills and experience in an engineering or technically demanding discipline
  • Aeronautical Engineering qualification and/or experience, or experience of a similar role for rotating plant or high pressure systems, would be advantageous
  • The ability to understand a technical narrative in unfamiliar disciplines with guidance from technical experts
  • Evident experience as a capable Technical Author by clearing demonstrating essential competencies
  • Strong writing and proofreading skills Knowledge of engineering documentation standards
  • Ability to provide high quality documentation with excellent attention to detail
  • Sense of narrative, and ability to translate complex technical messages using simple language, and create user friendly manuals and other documents (in hard copy (paper) and electronic format)
  • Evident experience as a Document Controller by clearing demonstrating essential competencies
  • Be able to keep up to date with document management processes
  • Understanding of the importance of document control systems in a safety critical environment
