We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer with a background in Automotive Powertrain Design for an exciting role with an Automotive company based in Essex.
Your Responsibilities:

  • Perform concept studies and layouts, as well as detailed component design, modelling and drawings (including GD&T)
  • Carry out design for manufacture and design for assembly for components and systems
  • Developing tolerance strategies for individual components and systems
  • Perform package checks
  • Capable of drawing checks
  • Responsible for detailed supplier discussions including relaying design intent to suppliers and understanding manufacturing constraints
  • Support in establishing component and/or system characteristics, attributes and requirements
  • Lead component design evolution
  • Liaise with analysis teams and understand the output to coordinate or implement design changes
  • Responsible for designing components to meet performance targets whilst ensuring durability and resistance to environmental inputs
  • Liaise with engineering teams and other designers to resolve design conflicts
  • Manage workload to ensure program milestones are met on-time
  • Support design reviews and management reviews
  • Travel to global suppliers may be required
  • Lead the PT Design Passenger Car Team (8 engineers)
  • Plan and support development of members of the team
  • Efficiently support and control the progress of current and future projects
  • Support in the development of new areas where the design department can gain new business
  • Conduct recruitment activities
  • Support developing new and maintaining existing customer relationships
  • Support business development activities
  • Organize department / team meetings
  • Liaise with customer regarding individual / team / AVL performance - establish regular meetings with customer supervisor / manager
  • Ensure sufficient project cover within your team

Your Profile:

  • Essential:
  • Significant experience of automotive powertrain component design/engineering
  • Mechanical or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above
  • Very good experience in CATIA V5
  • Experience using linked multi-model assemblies
  • Highly motivated and a team player
  • Experience of data management tools
  • Strong GD&T, DFM and DFA experience
  • Understanding of component materials and manufacturing processes (E.g. castings/fabrications etc.)
  • Fastener engineering
  • Engineering design calculations by hand or spread sheet, using a "Classical" approach
  • Quality disciplines (E.g. FMEA, fishbone diagrams and 8D analysis)
  • Component & system specification
  • Robust test plan development
  • Excellent soft skills
  • Good understanding of latest industry developments & technology trends
  • Excellent oral and written English
  • Communication and teamwork skills, presentation skills and readiness to cooperate
  • Sense of responsibility and entrepreneurial thinking
  • Preferable:
  • Master or PhD in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Experience in designing complex automotive powertrain components
  • Excellent base engine systems knowledge
  • Experience of digital mock up management
  • Experience of developing major base engine components e.g. cylinder head/block
  • Experience of developing plastic components
  • Experience of developing sheet metal components
  • IMechE Chartered
  • Experience managing a team of engineers
