Principal Mechanical Design Engineer - Australia - Competitive - Permanent

A Principal Mechanical Design Engineer is required to join the Management Team within a market leading innovative engine propulsion systems company and the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for and have ownership of the detailed mechanical design and engineering process through to integration, test and verification.

The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for developing technical solutions and evolution of current products from an engineering full life-cycle perspective. Specifically, the successful Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will have experience with the Design and Development of Base Engine systems and technology.

Principal Mechanical Design Engineer - Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Team management of design leads and analysis engineers
  • Liaison with external customers and suppliers as required
  • Technical authority and approval of mechanical designs
  • Detailed design of new products and evolution of existing products
  • Provide expert mechanical knowledge to project team
  • Provide direction on mechanical design and analysis activity
  • Meet project design and customer requirements and lead mechanical design reviews
  • Engage with customers and provide on site support as required
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals and quotations
  • Manage projects to deliver on time and to budget to meet customer specifications
  • Coordinate resources as required to progress project and proactive risk management
  • Manage material selection according to design specifications
  • Establish and implement component testing requirements

Technical Skills and Experience Required for Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Degree Qualification in Engineering and a background within a relevant industry
  • Experience within the area of engine design and analysis
  • Engine design experience and detailed knowledge of mechanical systems design
  • Knowledge Base Engines and internal combustion engines (iC)
  • A working understanding of engine electrical and engine electronic systems
  • Detailed knowledge of engine and engine component manufacturing techniques
  • Detailed knowledge of materials used with internal combustion engines (iC) applications
  • Knowledge of hardening steels & heat treatments prototype manufacture & development
  • Experienced with engine mechanical components and systems through to production
  • Supplier selection and technical development through component
  • Knowledge of system requirements from concept, development phase and production
  • An in-depth knowledge and understanding of industry related testing standards
  • Strong analytical skills, with capability to design and execute performance testing
