Mechanical Engineer - Shropshire - Defence - Attractive - Permanent


A Mechanical Engineer is required by a large Defence Systems Organisation working with complex engineering projects on behalf of the MoD. The Mechanical Engineer will be based in Shropshire with some occasion travel. The Mechanical Engineer will be involved in the design & integration of equipment at the system and sub-system levels. The Mechanical Engineer will be exposed you to different Defence Vehicle Platforms and Systems to see projects through their full lifecycle. The Mechanical Engineer will have general engineering management responsibilities for a range of projects and tasks.

Mechanical Engineer responsibilities as will involve:

  • Managing requirements and producing technical specifications
  • Managing all technical issues with customers and suppliers
  • Managing system design and integration into vehicle platforms
  • Participation in testing acceptance and verification of systems
  • Supporting the Sub System Manager as required
  • Representing company as Design Authority for structure and other sub systems
  • Providing engineering input to customer including cost estimating and programme plans
  • Producing technical reports, meeting minutes and visit reports
  • Leading and/or attending design reviews and managing actions
  • Oversee and direct the work of subordinates within the team
  • Contribute to the development of team capability
  • Conduct Performance Developments Reviews for subordinates

Mechanical Engineer Skills and Qualifications should include:

  • Degree / HND or equivalent qualification or experience in Mechanical Engineering
  • Project Management and cross functional experience within engineering projects
  • Strong understanding of defence vehicle structures, systems and their development
  • Experience of requirements ownership and development, system level design
  • Knowledge of system safety and of supporting the identification of system hazards
  • Experience of the whole lifecycle of defence vehicles, including integration and test
  • Line management experience of engineering project teams
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft based products (Excel, Word and Project)
  • SAP knowledge would be advantageous, but training will be provided
  • Knowledge of vehicle structures, armour systems, seating, air-conditioning, fire suppression, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical protection, and small and large-scale Fabrications would be an advantage.
