A blue-chip product development company requires a skilled materials scientist to help it achieve its current and long term battery ambitions and support its RDD lab activities.

The Materials Engineer will work within the energy storage research team and will be focussed on working towards innovative materials development and characterisation techniques within target specifications. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute and apply knowledge to lab synthesis and production of materials for batteries with targeted compositions and quality, including composites and electrochemically active materials for next generation electrochemical device
  • Demonstrate hands-on experience in chemical reactions and process equipment used in lab towards scale up to meet target specifications such as material properties, energy density and efficiency within the planned timeline
  • Analyse structural and powder properties, and address the impacts on structure stabilisation, impurities and crystal growth optimisation to overcome scale up issues with the development of new materials
  • Decant key figures of merit and report on their effectiveness in a timely manner
  • Communicate clearly and effectively the results and update project status to a broad spectrum of associated project members and senior management
  • Work with other scientists and engineers to ensure that the product performance and reliability are met, within the planned timeline of the project
  • Be flexible to travel between work sites

Qualifications, skills and behaviours:

Education and experience:

  • Minimum MSc/MChem degree (2:1 degree or better) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Materials Physics or equivalent with a demonstrable level of experience in a related field

Minimum technical experience and knowledge:

  • Hands-on experience in synthesis, solid-state chemistry and co-precipitation of inorganic and solid-state materials
  • Expert knowledge of x-ray diffraction with the ability to perform quantitative Rietveld analysis of XRD data
  • Deep understanding of material structure and electronic property relationships and able to use a variety of techniques to characterise structure and materials properties 
  • Safely handle materials and good laboratory practice in compliance with corporate and chemical hygiene policies, including health and safety, COSHH and risk assessments
  • Use of electrochemical characterisation methods for performance evaluation, including cell testing and differential capacity analysis
  • Ability to take raw data files and process into graphs using Excel
  • Ability to interpret recorded data and analyse trends in a useful way to guide future work
  • Critically analyse and question all findings 
  • Contribute to the development of innovative materials and optimal composition for use in electrochemical devices
  • Familiar with discovery and process development of new materials for performance verification and evaluation
  • Conduct benchmark studies, organise sample, and data analyses to guide materials development 
  • Provide regular updates on progress through meetings presentations and progress reports
  • Ability to work autonomously and across teams and keep an open mind

Desirable experience:

  • Experience with co-precipitation towards scale-up and material characterisation tools.
