Job Title: Category Buyer

Location: Wolverhampton

Salary: Negotiable dependent on experience



  • We are currently recruiting a Category Buyer for our client based in Wolverhampton, the role will be responsible for developing and managing the sourcing strategy for externally purchased materials and will report to the head of purchasing.
  • The position will be responsible for spend for direct materials, covering steel and aluminum purchases for the following derivatives: Blank, Strip, Sheet, Profiles, Formed Section, Box Section, Tube, Casting and Forgings.
  • This role would suit someone who has significant commercial experience in steel manufacturing, steel distribution or steel purchasing and a knowledge of steel manufacturing processes and outputs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Creation and communication of sourcing strategies for allocated commodities covering total spend across the group
  • Responsible for defining the supply base and rationalising the number of suppliers used to leverage spend and reduce complexity
  • Development of robust and productive supplier relationships
  • Lead role in management of supplier performance, coordinating SPM meetings to maximise inbound performance across the group
  • Development of pricing through tendering and component assessment forms (CAFs)
  • Cost avoidance and management of increases via negotiation and benchmarking
  • All aspects of cost reduction to meet department targets
  • Continuous improvement of the supply base targeting delivery, quality and cost
  • NPI support including the identification and selection of materials, suppliers, technologies and processes
  • Coordination of the category strategy with key internal stakeholders; supporting the site buyers in their tactical delivery of the strategy
  • Development of and compliance with purchasing processes
  • Any other duties deemed necessary to support the business

Key Experience:

  • Expert technical knowledge of steel and aluminium grades, associated chemical compositions, properties and applications
  • Expert knowledge of steel manufacturing and related processes including forming, forging and casting
  • An established network within the UK/Europe steel industry is highly desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong written and verbal communication
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret commercial data
  • Organised with ability to accurately record and report on activity
  • Fully conversant with M.S. Office particularly, Excel
  • Confident with negotiation and issue resolution
  • Self-motivated with ability to work remotely without direct supervision
  • Ability to liaise and work with internal stakeholders
  • Ability to work as part of a nationwide team
  • Experience of tendering and procurement processes
  • Prepared to travel to suppliers and group locations (Travel expectation approximately of 20 - 25%)
