Associate Principal Power Electronics Engineer  -  Wiltshire - £ Highly Competitive DOE

Our client is a high-profile technology and product leader and is now seeking a talented and experienced Associate Principal Power Electronics Engineer within an Electronic Systems Research Team. You will report to Senior Manager of Power Electronics Research and lead the development of innovative and world-leading products for the global market.

As Associate Principal Power Electronics Engineer  –  You will be required to

  • Be a subject matter expert in the field of power electronics for one or more of the technologies we research and develop.
  • Support multiple, small concurrent power electronics projects to deep dive and de-risk to ensure the success of integrating cutting edge technologies.
  • Collaborate with the different sub-teams within Research, NPI, and development teams to gain an in-depth product understanding, while using your expert knowledge of the latest technologies to create innovative systems and solutions and solve complex system level problems.
  • Ensure the team generate suitable test specifications to ensure product reliability, safety and robustness. This includes the development of test environments including simulation, emulation and hardware/test equipment interactions.
  • Produce hardware designs and performing review activities (component selection, schematic capture, PCB layout and reviewing of the aforementioned).
  • Managing technical risks in a project through FMEAs.
  • Assist in producing review packs which typically include concept specifications, requirements
  • Research new and emerging technologies through visiting conferences, trade shows, meeting suppliers, reading papers and patents. Identify emerging IP and ensure inventions are submitted to the IP team.
  • Manage laboratories and mentoring staff within the Electronics Research team to ensure team philosophies and working practices are applied to a project.

As Associate Principal Power Electronics Engineer  – You will be

  • A BEng/MEng degree holder (or equivalent) in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or other relevant discipline, or a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry.
  • Be able to demonstrate an ability to research and innovate, within a team environment.
  • You should have a broad knowledge of electronics, and power electronics, with experience in motor inverter design and motor control, particularly brushless DC motors, servo or stepper motors. Have experience of power converter design.
  • PCB layout knowledge – including size/cost minimisation while achieving layouts for inherently good EMC compliance and thermal design.
  • Knowledge of analogue to digital converters, op-amps, comparators, voltage references etc.
  • Schematic capture using Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics VX or other main stream tools
  • Use of SPICE based simulation tools such as Simetrix or LTSpice. Use of Matlab or Python
  • Ability to evaluate complete systems and drive optimisation.
  • Proven ability to build and manage supplier relationships.
  • Ability to mentor junior members of staff.
  • Excellent team working skills and a desire to inspire others within the team.
  • Able to work on several projects running concurrently in a fast-paced environment.
