Mechanical Design Engineer - Defence and Military Systems - Permanent - Attractive - Southwest

A Mechanical Design Engineer is required to join an International Defence Systems company that designs, manufactures, and supports world leading military Systems. The successful Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design and engineering for a number of projects. Working as part of the Engineering Team the Mechanical Design Engineer is expected to develop the project technical requirements, produce concept design solutions, detailed designs including generating and updating 3D CAD models and 2D technical drawings. The Mechanical Design Engineer may also support build and test activities, including hands on tasks where appropriate. The Mechanical Design Engineer will report to the Lead/Principal Engineers and is expected to pro-actively participate in, and when necessary, lead improvement initiatives using a continuous improvement mindset. The Mechanical Design Engineer will be a very capable engineer, confident and articulate with good communication skills, able to interface with in-house colleagues, suppliers and customers.

Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the following:

  • Responsible for actioning engineering & design activities including supporting product development.
  • Responsible for delivering their work packages to a defined standard, budget and time-scale. 
  • Working within the Engineering policies and processes.
  • Be responsible for delivery of their own personal development plan actions.
  • Be responsible for the delivery of agreed process improvement activities.
  • Support customer visits/technical meetings and also Operations, Projects, Procurement, Quality.
  • Generate purchase requisitions where necessary for delivery of budgeted activities and hardware.
  • Working with other areas of the business, particularly the manufacturing, quality and operations.
  • Deliver design activities that have been made the responsibility of the Design Engineer.
  • Working within the Design Engineering Team to create, update and control 3D CAD models.
  • Work with engineer teams to create 2D technical drawings and engineering documentation.
  • Working accurately in a data management system within a configuration-controlled environment.
  • Working within defined safety standards and testing processes and methodologies.
  • Protect the business confidentiality when disclosing information to 3rd parties.
  • Producing concept and detailed designs with justifications.
  • Progressing documentation and engineering change control processes.
  • Carry out engineering calculations to support design proposals.
  • Create and manage documentation to support the understanding of the knowledge.
  • Present and communicate designs and design changes.
  • Contributing to internal design reviews and support prototypes build and test activities.
  • Actively support continuous improvement activities throughout the business.

The Mechanical Design Engineer should have the following Qualifications Skills or Experience:

  • Degree or an equivalent combination of experience and training in mechanical or related discipline.
  • A good command of mechanical engineering fundamentals in a manufacturing environment.
  • Drive and flexibility to maintain pace of work as priorities and customer requirements change.
  • The ability to communicate designs effectively through written and verbal methods.
  • Experience of generating technical drawings and geometric tolerancing.
  • A strong team player and the ability to produce high quality output with attention to detail.
  • A hands-on approach able and willing to perform tasks effectively.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of design, design analysis, verification and validation.
  • Support techniques such as CAD, FEA, FMECA, DFM to ensure manufacturing engineering and quality.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of PDM and ERP software.
  • Willingness and ability to travel worldwide and the ability to obtain a UK SC clearance.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development and education.
  • UK driving licence and Chartered Engineer status with a relevant UK professional body preferred.
  • Experience in a design/manufacturing environment and experience of SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD.
  • Experience of hydraulics and high-pressure oil and gas sealing technologies.
  • Familiarity with multinational projects subject to US ITAR and UK export legislation.

**Security Clearance (SC) may be required due to the nature of the Defence products involved**
