The future of transportation is exciting, and is poised to dramatically change how we live our lives and travel. It is also fundamentally changing the related labour markets.

Industry’s move towards automated, connected and electrified technologies in addition to the digitisation of manufacturing will affect existing workforces and the careers available within electric vehicle (EV), connected and autonomous (CAV) and infrastructure (charging points) industries.

There are plenty of studies, research papers and strategies that discuss future skills. However, they generally only go as far as to open the debate; provide a perspective, vision or even an idealistic view of jobs in the future. In the here and now, there is a lot of uncertainty and very little practical guidance out there, particularly for employees. So what's most important is for people and companies to be proactive and start to prepare...

WHAT IF YOU'RE AN EMPLOYEE?

We are increasingly finding candidates concerned about their future job prospects, and asking:

  • Will my job or skill set become obsolete?
  • What skills will be in demand in the future?
  • What transferable skills do I have?
  • Is there a natural job role or area could I move into?
  • How do I go about upskilling?
  • I want a job in EV and CAV - what do I need to do next?

With fossil fuel powered cars set to be banned as soon as 2035, traditional powertrain as we know it could creep into extinction  – alongside the jobs that support the function. This is a daunting prospect for those that have dedicated their career to the specialism.

Traditionally training in the automotive sector has been difficult to navigate - characterised by a complicated patchwork of colleges, universities, private providers and in-house training. For those looking to upskill now, however, many of these issues are being addressed and many employers have started to collaborate with academia to create new courses that evolve and adapt quickly to include the latest technological advancements and trends.

AS AN INDIVIDUAL, WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

1.  What jobs are trending in future mobility?

Find out the top roles and salaries in future mobility today and what will be the trending positions tomorrow by downloading our eGuide. Understand future demand/trends and where the industry is heading… If there are any fields that you’re interested in then do your homework and read around the topic.

2.  What are your employer’s future plans?

Understand where your employer is heading and consider:

  • What are their strategic ambitions?
  • Will they have any skill gaps in the next 2-5 years?
  • Am I interested in a job that fills these skills deficits in the future?

3.  Find relevant courses and whether your employer already collaborates with academia

There are more and more courses available in advanced technology and future mobility. Do your research and speak to relevant training providers to find out how to upskill. For example, the National Cyber Security Centre or the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) for intelligent vehicles are great starting points.

Does your business already engage with academia? For example, the MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) is a partnership led by North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, along with HORIBA MIRA, Coventry University, Loughborough University and the University of Leicester. The institute offers courses for disruptive technologies such as electrification and driverless cars. Which leads onto our next point….

4.  Marry your career ambitions with employers' vision

What’s critical here is to understand whether your employer’s future skills need matches with your own interests or career ambitions/development.

5.  Speak to your employer

If your conclusion from point 4 is that there is an alignment and that upskilling would be mutually beneficial, then approach your employer. Have a plan or proposal and be ready to explain how this would benefit the business, for example:

This is the business’ desired position

This is the skill set missing

Here are the courses available

This would enable the business to fill skills deficit and reach desired positioning

It maybe that you provide a solution not previously considered. Even if your suggestion cannot be facilitated, it will demonstrate engagement with the business’ future plans and your commitment to continued personal development.

What if an employer is not providing upskilling opportunities?...

6.  Get in touch with a specialist recruitment business

If you have a specific career path in mind, then a specialist recruiter will be able to discuss the market, the positions typically available and the skills, experience and qualifications desirable to employers. If you are unsure about what to do next, a specialist recruiter can pinpoint your transferable skills and the direction you could take your career based upon your experience and qualifications.

It is also worthwhile getting in touch with specialist training providers to understand the various training options available once you have an idea of which career path you want to take.

Not sure what your next career direction will be?
Or do you want a career in future mobility?

What if I’m an employer? How should I respond to future mobility skills needs?

Our workforce planning toolkit is a great starting point. It provides a practical workforce strategy framework to begin assessing your existing workforce and identifying skill gaps and the means to fill those gaps (and it’s definitely not just recruitment!)

However, there a clear message - everyone must take responsibility. Businesses are working collaboratively with academia, government, industry, research institutions and adjacent sectors to bridge the skills gap more than ever. In addition to this, the Future of British Manufacturing Initiative (FoMBI) is a great way for SMEs to start the journey, connect with academia and access skills.
