Groundbreaking schools engineering scheme

When Mike South, Director of Jonathan Lee Recruitment and Managing Director of Factura, recently saw a presentation for the Primary Engineer scheme, he was particularly impressed. "Frankly, I was amazed at the practical projects and very advanced levels of maths and learning achieved by primary school pupils involved in the scheme. Primary Engineer is without doubt helping ensure a future generation of professional engineers for the UK."

Primary Engineer is a nationally established "not for profit" organisation dedicated to furthering design technology and the practical application of science and maths in Primary Schools. It is now looking for engineers, companies and schools from across the UK to get involved in its activities.

Primary Engineer is sponsored by the Learning Grid and supported by the IMechE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers) and ETB (Engineering and Technology Board). It was established to address the long-term issues of securing the next generation of engineers in the UK. Its activities include teacher training, links between secondary and primary schools, and national challenge activities. A big bonus is the provision of materials such as interactive white board resources and books for the classroom.

Primary Engineer has developed the highest quality maths master classes and science-based activities with the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

"These very young pupils are learning maths and science at a far quicker rate, almost by stealth, with astonishing results and increased awareness of real-world engineering." commented Susan Scurlock, National Director.

Contact your local primary school to raise awareness of Primary Engineer if you would like to see an engineering focus developed in the classroom.
If you are a company wishing to promote engineering locally, Primary Engineer could be the perfect vehicle.
As part of the careers focus of Primary Engineer, children have the opportunity to interview engineers from industry. You can offer yourself individually, as a qualified engineer, to talk about your career. The children write an article from this, which is published in the local press.
