With redundancies now spreading outside of the financial sector, affecting companies across the country and in all business areas, organisations are having to face the difficult task of reducing head count to save costs.

How a company manages its redundancy programme will have a huge effect on its reputation when it comes to retaining good talent now and being well placed to recruit good people in better times.

It is vital that those remaining in the business are motivated and understand why the action has been taken. The feelings they have towards their employer will seriously affect whether they continue to perform and are committed to helping the company during these recessionary times.

Working with an experienced outplacement company will help to protect the employer brand and ensure that leavers are given every opportunity to find meaningful work.

Henry Noteman who heads up Jonathan Lee Recruitment's Integrated Human Resources business has the following tips to help organisations to choose the right outplacement provider.

  • Check the company's track record in outplacement and its ability to offer a redundancy programme that is themed to the organisation.

  • Ensure the outplacement company is attentive to the needs of the individual.

  • Ask for evidence of empathy and engagement with individuals on previous programmes.

  • Make sure that you meet the consultants who will be delivering the project.

  • Beware of hidden costs! Check that venues, travel and subsistence are documented in proposals.

  • Investigate an outplacement provider's access to the job market.

  • Check what the provider can offer in terms of coaching, assessment, etc.
