Despite the harsh economic climate, the defence industry is holding up well says Kay Alexander from Jonathan Lee Recruitment’s defence specialist, John Prodger Recruitment. “We have had around 120 jobs in the defence area since Christmas” she says. Kay puts the continued demand for good engineers in the defence sector down to a number of new contract announcements, including the $2bn investment in the further development of the Lockheed Martin Lightning II fighter jet, which will create 800 jobs over ten years and the £450m five-year contract won by BAE Systems to maintain and support the RAF’s Typhoon fleet of aircraft. In addition, Homeland Security and the fact that the UK and US has forces abroad which need updated technology, is keeping the sector strong. Currently the UK defence industry employs over 300,000 people which accounts for ten per cent of UK manufacturing jobs. “Some of the defence projects that have been announced are truly massive enabling job creation as well as protection. This is a good time for anyone with specialist skills to return to the sector” said Kay. In particular she said that companies across the country are looking for people with skills in military communications, surveillance, weapon systems, electronic warfare and general defence or aerospace systems engineering. John Prodger Recruitment materially strengthens Jonathan Lee's existing defence work.
