UAV Engines Ltd. finds the right fit
In January 2007, UAV Engines Limited (UEL) was experiencing rapid growth and wanted a dedicated recruitment partner to help it find skilled engineers with the right cultural fit for the company. Jonathan Lee Recruitment offered an attractive solution and now has a sole supplier agreement with UEL.
UAV Engines Limited (UEL) designs, develops and produces engines for the propulsion of medium sized, tactical unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). The Staffordshire based company has experienced rapid growth over recent years, having expanded from 16 to 46 employees to support a 600% growth in sales.
Jonathan Lee Recruitment started working with UEL in 2002 and became its sole supplier in January 2007, in a two-year deal. By opting for this agreement, UEL aimed to simplify and streamline the recruitment process.
UEL Managing Director, Dave Cliff, explains: “We used to receive so many calls each week from recruitment companies, wasting valuable time and money. The sole supplier relationship made sense as it gives us good value for money and ensures that Jonathan Lee’s consultants dedicate the necessary time and effort into finding the right people for our business.
“Jonathan Lee offers us the benefits of working with a nationwide recruiter, whilst also maintaining a close relationship. Their two dedicated consultants have made every effort to get to know us and understand our business, as well as the culture and needs of the company.”
Jonathan Lee’s understanding of the business was crucial to the success of the relationship because UEL had quite specific criteria in searching for potential employees. These included sensitive military security requirements, the need for specific technical experience and also candidates who would fit in with the team and the culture.
These specialised needs can make recruiting difficult and in some cases Jonathan Lee must use its own expertise to better define the required role, taking current market conditions into consideration.
Cliff explains: “Jonathan Lee has helped us define those characteristics that are imperative, and those we can be flexible about, and make us aware of new expertise, systems, qualifications, technology etc… which may be out there in the marketplace.”
The results
Since becoming a sole supplier, Jonathan Lee Recruitment has placed 14 key staff with UEL.
Cliff concludes: “In an expanding market, the companies that do well are those that have the best people. We have a low turnover of staff and want to keep it that way - Jonathan Lee Recruitment has played a big role in our success and staff retention is key on their agenda.”
