Telematics and Connected Vehicle System Engineer - Automotive - Bedfordshire

A Telematics and Connected Vehicle System Engineer is required with experience of the architecture and operation of off board systems required to support connected car telematics systems for a contract a position based in Bedfordshire.

Our client, a global automotive OEM based in Bedfordshire requires a Telematics and Connected Vehicle System Engineer to successfully deliver our client's vehicle projects to market through design & development of electrical, electronic systems and software driven applications, to our client's Design standards. This will include the creation of specifications, management of suppliers, coordination with both internal and external functional teams, and implementation to our production plants globally.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Collaboration with Off Board Connected Car team, hardware design teams, test teams (both on board and off board) and customer orientated engineering team to define project development and testing plans.
  • Developing both component and system specifications for both on board (hardware) and off board (services) for advanced automotive telematics and connected car systems.
  • Root cause investigation of concerns identified by internal and external customers, involving all elements (both on and off board) of the connect car architecture.
  • Creation of test specifications to ensure full end to end validation of the connected car systems
  • Implementation of on-board telematics systems for all vehicles manufactured in Europe and Russia.
  • Negotiate and coordinate specification and vehicle specific requirements with global teams.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Marketing teams to ensure technical solution supports business objectives & with purchasing team to support sourcing and cost definition/reduction tasks.
  • Collaborate with related engineering sections to ensure all system components are packaged and connected correctly to meet all system design and regulation requirements.
  • Status reporting to management at all levels.
  • Managing Tier 1 suppliers to deliver products to Quality, Cost & Timing targets.

The Telematics and Connected Vehicle System Engineer must have the following skills and experience:

  • Have an understanding and experience of telematics system development and test.
  • Have experience of the architecture and operation of off board systems required to support connected car telematics systems.
  • Have relevant experience in automotive electrical and electronic development and test completing a minimum of one previous vehicle development, or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience on a major development program.
  • Have experience of managing Tier 1 suppliers in the development and test of a complex electronic product.
  • Be able to operate CANalyzer software or similar and interpret the results.
  • Be able to follow system circuit diagrams and identify electrical connections.
  • Be able to demonstrate and have practical experience in problem solving tools and techniques.
  • Have ability to prioritise and multitask between multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Have good communication skills and be able to communicate effectively in a cross cultural and cross functional team.
  • Self motivating and self managing. Pro-active. Positive. Affable and energetic personality.
  • Flexible regarding working practice and working hours.
  • Understand Mechanical Engineering principles, electrical theory and the operation of electronic devices.
  • Knowledge of software and hardware development.
  • Be able to travel abroad, typically a few days to 2 weeks, but on rare occasions could be longer.
  • Competent with PC applications. MS office, Image editing etc.

Additionally the following would be an advantage.

  • Knowledge of CAN.
  • Knowledge of software programming and software quality assurance.
  • Knowledge of Antenna or Communications technology.
  • Understanding of electronic mass production techniques and processes.
  • Working knowledge of CAD systems such as IDEAS or NX
