Operations Manager - Fabrication

My client are a well respected supplier of fabricated and machined products into a variety of industries including defence, telecommunications, aerospace, oil and gas and the nuclear industry.

They are looking for a dynamic Operations Manager to run their fabrication and welding department.

Experience of fabrication and welding is highly desirable for this role.

Overall Job Purpose:

  • The job holder is responsible for all their departmental manufacturing activities.
  • Ensuring and maintaining a safe working environment, and adhere to EHS requirements.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in line with quality certifications, driving continuous improvement, managing resources available to maximise efficiency and meet sites scorecard objectives.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide the leadership and organisation required to conduct current fabrication & welding operations and develop the capability to meet future needs.
  • Maximise staff contribution and develop individuals to their full potential by providing effective coaching/mentoring and appraisal throughout the department.
  • Operate to high standards of Quality, Environmental, Health and safety ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements and standards applicable.
  • Ensure the department meets agreed targets for product quality, product availability, output, timeliness, and cost.
  • Create budgets and forecasts to the dates required and control costs within agreed limits.
  • Drive and lead continuous improvement activities within the department.
  • Ensure the departments equipment and facilities are maintained and upgraded to meet required quality standards and future growth.

Relevant contacts in relation to key responsibilities:

  • Internal: CEO, Group strategic commercial director, CFO and managing director and all Newcastle departments.
  • External: Auditors, customers.

Objectives and measurement:

  • OTD, % margin output, financial, SS, HSE, Development, Quality.

Person specification - Qualifications:

  • IOSH Managing Safety and risk assessments.
  • Education to degree level desirable
  • Formal leadership and management training desirable.

Person specification - Skills and Knowledge

  • Requires proven experience of fabrication shop management.
  • Needs a comprehensive understanding of operations management.
  • An experienced leader in an operational role.
  • Needs to appreciate and understand company values and be able to translate them into actions and procedures which meet the needs of his/her part of the organisation.

You are likely to be currently working as an Operations Manager, Production Manager, Manufacturing Manager or Head of Manufacturing ideally with a fabrication and welding background.
