Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role:

Our client's World Championship winning Hybrid Power Unit Unit consists of the integration of the internal combustion engine, two high power density electric motors, a high speed turbocharger assembly, and state of the art battery and power electronics technologies. Mechanical Engineering is the heart of each of these systems, with the quest for efficiency, performance and reliability at the fore. As a mechanical engineer within the product engineering team you have the unique opportunity to convert your creative, innovative ideas into hardware that will make a difference at the race track, within weeks of being conceived. The role includes:

  • Creation and validation of novel engineering design solutions, supported by right first time principles and analysis to meet demanding performance and cost targets
  • Creation of robust and versatile models to demonstrate concepts, in both solids and surfaces, with engineering drawings to complement design release
  • Technical development of Power Unit components and systems
  • Problem solving and failure analysis
  • Writing of test requests, reviewing results, and writing technical reports
  • Building strong inter-departmental working relationships - teamwork is critical to our success
  • Championing best practices & procedures
  • Liaison with internal and external suppliers as an integral part of a successful engineering journey

About you:

  • You will be an important part of our team, and will be instrumental in our success. You should:
  • Hold a 2:1 degree (minimum) in Mechanical Engineering, or a similar discipline
  • Have a minimum of 5 years post graduate experience in an engineering led, challenging, mechanical engineering position, having demonstrated the ability to innovate and deliver solutions to difficult problems
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to engineer solutions considering material selection, manufacturability, heat treatment & other process requirements, surface finish requirements, geometrical tolerancing & control over critical features, etc.
  • Have broad knowledge of internal combustion engines, their systems & energy recovery systems
  • Experienced in the design of highly loaded mechanical components & systems
  • Be experience in 3D CAD design software (preferably CATIA), and key simulation/analysis packages
