In March 2007 an EU summit endorsed the renewable energy roadmap, outlining a binding target to have 20% of the EU's overall energy consumption coming from renewables by 2020, in addition to each member state achieving at least 10% of their transport fuel consumption from bio fuels.

Renewable energies such as wind, wave and tidal power, solar energy, hydropower and biomass will play a major role in achieving these targets as they are not depletable and are less harmful to our environment than fossil fuels.

The technologies currently employed to harness the power of our natural resources require continual development, innovation and productionisation before this target becomes viable.
