Interview Tips

The key to a successful interview is preparation which can alleviate much of the pressure and anxiety that builds up towards the big day.

Remember that an interview is as beneficial to you as it is to the company. It allows you to gain information about the job and gives you the opportunity to ask questions as well as get a general feel for the organisation.

Employing someone is an expensive exercise, and so companies want to get it right. This is why you may be put through a series of tests and interviews before the company makes a final decision.

Preparation - The key to any successful interview

Gain as much knowledge about the organisation, its products, culture and environment as possible. You can almost guarantee that you will be asked the question “What do you know about our organisation”. The more you can tell them, the more interest you are showing in the role and company by taking the time to do your research. Information can be found from their corporate website, and literature, as well as doing a search for their name on a search engine such as Google or Yahoo for information from 3rd party sources.

Once you know the above, make a list of the skills and knowledge you have that would be of value to them. You cannot market yourself without knowing what you are selling.

Read the job description thoroughly – know as much as you can about the position. If there are things that you are unsure about, write a list of questions to ask during your interview to clarify any grey areas. This shows genuine interest in the position and company alike.

Prepare for routine queries concerning your motivation or decision-making process; also consider awkward questions that may be asked. Particularly, think how to explain apparent time gaps in your life history such as time spent travelling.

One of the best ways to prepare is to run through a few likely interview questions and practice your answers before the day.
