Neon night run 5k

Last week, our brave team of resolute, relentless runners donned all things hi-vis to take
part in Mary Stevens Hospice's Neon Night 5km Run.

Having endured a summer of intense training regimes, our elite squad was battle ready and eager to go! Never will a 5km race be fought so valiantly or colourfully.

Daubed in neon – their war paint was no less frightening for being swathed in pinks and glitter. With the sun set, the team gathered at the start line, tutu’s fluttering, enjoying the pre-walk party with live music, food stalls, fire shows, performers and a few glasses from the prosecco van!

The pre-race warm-up did just the trick to motivate and ‘psych-up’ everyone, with our own team members leading the ‘oggy oggy oggy’ chant to the crowd.

The team were raring to go, only to be thrown a last minute curve ball; the course instructions. Encompassing around 40-50 directions, it led to complete and utter confusion. Remembering all of perhaps the first 3 instructions, the claxon sounded and the race began.

Not to be left completely bewildered, the team did the only thing they could – follow the crowd in front and hope for the best!

And they set off. And they were glorious in their walking, running and dancing!

During the race, a few regrettable pre-race fuel choices became apparent (McDonalds and KFC) and a few close calls with Himley Park’s pot holes and branches camouflaged by the nights sky almost taking a few victims also threatened to spoil the run, but fortunately, there were no lasting injuries!

They may have gone ‘the long way around’ a few times on the first circuit of the course, but the team kept on, and with the help of the fire-spitters, bhangra-drummers and a disco tent enroute, the team demonstrated courage and determination alongside some spectacular dance moves (naturally), to successfully complete the course!

Well done Tracy’s Trekkers; Dan Plimmer, Paula Ingram, Lee Elwell, Peter Heap, Oliver Smith, Ed Smith, Jason Cole, Stephanie Willetts, Kate Barnard and Katherine Garratt.

Thank you to Jonathan Lee Recruitment for sponsoring the teams race entry costs and to everyone that sponsored the team. It’s not too late to donate, follow this link to support this very worthy cause: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tracystrekkers
