Lufthansa CEO speaks at the Aviation Club of the UK

Posted by: Jayne Wogan 15 Feb 16 - 12:11PM  | Aerospace

Members of the team from Jonathan Lee Recruitment attended a luncheon with the Aviation Club of the UK last week to hear Carsten Spohr, Chairman and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG speak about the company’s performance and future plans.

The Aviation Club hosts eight Club luncheons annually, which are open to Members and their invited guests.  Each lunch offers an excellent platform for business, hospitality and networking with around 220 industry professionals in attendance at the Institute of Directors in Pall Mall.  The event on Wednesday 10th February provided a forum for members to discuss, promote and develop all aspects of civil aviation.

Mr Spohr reported increased passenger numbers for Lufthansa and a strong profit forecast for the business but is now focused on ensuring that the structure of the business is fit for the future.

Jonathan Lee at Aviation ClubMr Spohr also warned that the industry should not rely on the current low fuel prices as a long term strategy.   Lufthansa AG is making a huge investment in new aircraft, with 52 planes scheduled for delivery in 2016 (one per week) and the focus is firmly on more fuel efficient aircraft, such as the latest delivery of an Airbus A320 Neo which is 15% more fuel efficient than the current model.  The company plans to continue with its current level of investment of up to 2.5 billion Euros year on year.

Jonathan Lee, Chairman commented; “It was very interesting to hear that Lufthansa had grown in revenue whilst reducing seat numbers.   I took the opportunity after his address to ask Mr Spohr if this meant that the company is targeting a wealthier market segment to achieve these results which he confirmed is the case.”

Jonathan Lee Aviation DinnerNicki Atherton, Business Development Executive for Aviation at Jonathan Lee was also impressed by the event and speaker.  “The aviation industry continues to be very important to both the UK and the global economies.  As a service provider to the industry, we seek to understand the challenges facing our clients and the professionals who work in the sector so that our services can evolve to support businesses for the future.  These forums are a fantastic way of keeping abreast of developments and connecting with key players.”
