Birmingham students learn the steps to success

As an engineering recruiter, we are acutely aware of two things; in order to get a job you need more than just good technical skills and that the engineers of tomorrow are the engineering students of today; for these reasons we were more than keen to attend a recent employability skills event at our local institution, the University of Birmingham.

The aim of the event was to help undergraduates develop their employability skills via interactive workshops, mock interviews and informative presentations. “It’s definitely important that we get involved in events like this,” says David Powers, Managing Consultant at Jonathan Lee (pictured), “these students recognise they need more than just academics to be successful in their career and it’s a real privilege to work with them to hone those skills.” The students heard from university staff and, in addition to Jonathan Lee Recruitment, companies like Ernst & Young and Amey who were also in attendance.

Richard Newman, Careers Advisor at the University of Birmingham told us that “these events are always popular and it’s a testament to the university that we can get companies such as Jonathan Lee Recruitment to come and talk to our students. The feedback we got from the students was excellent, and we hope that the course will provide them with a real advantage as they set out on their career paths.”

We were very pleased to receive some fantastic feedback from the event, describing the talk by David Powers as “very motivational”, “interesting” and “thought-provoking”. One student said “The assessment centre group work was fantastic, a great way to develop team, listening and compromise skills,” kindly adding that “Jonathan Lee Recruitment was the most helpful.” We’ll take that! It was a real pleasure to attend and we’re looking forward to doing so again the next time!
