Managing change at The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board
Integrated HR has been supporting the
Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) with a selection of recruitment and training initiatives in support of its recent restructuring and relocation programme.
AHDB was established in April 2008 merging five existing organisations from
around the country, creating a number of new operating divisions - including
DairyCo, the Meat and Livestock Commercial Services Limited (MLCSL), the
Potato Council and the Horticultural Development Company - and bringing
together a range of very different approaches and ideas. In order to help
smooth the transition and ensure the new organisation would work
effectively, Integrated HR was asked to provide training and workshops in
leadership, team development and communication skills, as well as supporting
the new organisation with internal and external recruitment.
The Integrated HR team began by working with individual DairyCo Senior
Management Team Members at a personal development level and this then led to
a wider team programme. The success of this activity then led to an internal
recruitment initiative with MLCSL, to identify divisional managers for the
organisation’s abattoir process management scheme across the UK.
Despite the unusual nature of the project, Integrated HR actually found many
similarities with recruiting for manufacturing and engineering positions.
Henry Noteman, Operations Manager, Integrated HR, explains: “While our
recruitment expertise is traditionally in industries that design, build and
make things, we actually found that the skills and competencies required in
these divisional manager roles were surprisingly similar to a lot of other
business management roles we support. We were therefore very well qualified
to identify the kind of candidates MLCSL were looking for.”
Following this, Integrated HR completed a team development day with the
DairyCo communications team and also provided selection support in
recruiting a new Head of Research and Development. This position is highly
specialised and attracted significant international interest so Henry and
the team developed a range of online selection tools as part of the
assessment process.
Debbie Murphy, HR Manager at AHDB, said: “Integrated HR has delivered the
practical training and development programmes and support we needed in a
number of areas of the organisation. We have been able to forge a successful
partnership with the team and know that they can respond quickly and
effectively to our needs within tight timescales.”
The AHDB HR and Corporate Services Division has now asked Integrated HR for
support with its own team moving forward.
